Dog Bark Collars

We use the term ‘worms in dogs’ to talk about a variety of different internal parasites which our dogs can pick up. Worms in dogs can be treated with preparations bought from the pet shop or the vet’s and this should be done regularly. Responsible pet care and regular worming treatments go hand in hand.
In the UK there are two types of worms in dogs which are very common. They are called roundworms and tapeworms. Unfortunately many puppies are born with a roundworm infection so they are very hard to avoid. It is therefore important to worm pets, especially puppies, regularly.

As worms in dogs go, roundworms can have serious consequences, despite the fact that many dogs which are infested will show no outward symptoms. Adult roundworms live in the dog’s intestine and eats the contents. This effectively means that the roundworms eat your dog’s food! In cases of serious infection there can be dozens of roundworms living inside one dog. This explains why dogs with severe infestations are malnourished, have dull coats and lack energy.

Roundworms can remain dormant in cysts inside the muscles of adult dogs. They then reawaken later on, often at times of stress. It is very common for them to be awoken by pregnancy, prompting them to migrate around the body and infect the unborn puppies. Even giving the mother dog worm treatment will not get rid of the worms in the unborn puppies. This is why worms in dogs are such a big problem to new born puppies.

mature worms release eggs which are passed in the dog’s faeces leading soil to become contaminated. Then other animals ingest the worms when snuffling in the soil. However, the most common roundworm in the UK, the Toxocara Canis can also infect children when they touch contaminated soil or sand pits. Worm larvae can migrate around the child’s body and will cause irreparable eye damage is they reach the retina. It is therefore very important to regularly treat worms in dogs.
