Man?s Best Friend Deserves The Very Best Dog Food

Responsible pet owners will do all they can to make sure their animal is healthy, but how many of us really understand the nutritional requirements of our dog?

Protein forms a crucial part of a dog’s diet, requiring about 18% in its daily feed just to remain active and healthy.Fat is important, with a healthy dog requiring about 5% fat in its daily feeding regime. It is important to balance protein and fats to ensure you don’t over feed one or the other.Just like humans, fat initially makes you feel very full. However, it does not nourish the dog and the dog will quickly feel hungry again leading to over eating and weight gain.

Store bought dog foodis the easiest way to feed your dog, but quality varies. Take time to read the ingredients list and when possible buy only from a trusted brand. You can mix pre-prepared dog food with home made food but remember to keep your eye on the level of fat.The following tips should go some way to helping you avoid raising a fussy eating dog…

1. Dogs should be fed two small meals each day, no more. Feeding your dog too frequently when he is older can turn him appear like a fussy eater, when he is actually full.

When you feed your dog don’t stand and stare at him whilst he eats. This meay lead him to think there is something wrong. Leave him to enjoy his food.

3. Don’t give into your dog and give him something else straight away if he refuses his meal, as he’s effectively training you and not the other way around!

4. Try and vary the diet as much as possible but avoid changing the food simply because your dog refuses to eat it.Of course if your dog continues to turn down food you need to check there is nothing medically wrong with him.

Dog’s do not become fussy overnight, so if your dog suddenly refuses to eat you should take him to the vet to get checked over.

6. It is possible that your dog will develop a preference for a certain type of food.If you find that your dog really refuses to eat certain foods you may need to back down and feed him only what he likes.

7. Don’t feed your dog a high fat diet, or junk food, including chocolate. It’s not good for them.
