Does Your Dog Bark Excessively? Undestand Why
Barking is a means of communication for dogs so you should not chastise your dog all the time for barking. However, when your dog barks excessively and would not stop even if you tell to, you have a pretty big problem on your hand. Your neighbors would not take it kindly if your dog barks all night and they may let you know in no uncertain terms on how they feel about your dog’s barking.
Now, just because your dog barks excessively that does not mean that you should get an anti-bark collar immediately to silence it. More often than not, the dog is trying to communicate to you that it’s very uncomfortable because of something and is just trying hard to get you to do something about it. When does your dog bark? If the dog feels you have forgotten its lunch, barking is the only way to let you know you forgot about it.
Hungry dogs can make a lot of noise so make it a point to feed your dog on time. In addition, if your dog has a toy that it likes to play with, you should see to it that the toy is around. Interestingly enough, dogs know that they can’t reach a toy on the top of a shelf, but they know that you can and will bark at you until you give it to them.
Dogs have emotional needs as well, so if the dog is not sick, not hungry, not thirsty, and its toys are around, it might be that it’s stressed or just bored. When a dog is left alone in a house or apartment for hours without company, it will start to bark in order to express whatever negative feelings it has.
In fact some dogs bark for hours out of boredom or anxiety. If the barking takes place when you’re working or at school, an anti bark collar will only add extra anxiety to your dog. Instead, try to spend some time with your dog, like taking him for a walk. The objective is stop the “locked” feeling of the dog, while making it feel you’re there for it. Moreover, you get to spend time with your dog, and do a bit of excercise, which is always better than sitting to watch TV.
Some types of dogs bark obsessively in response to certain stimulants. If you took all the steps above and still wonder “why does my dog bark?” then it might be excited about something else, like the sound your phone makes when it rings. To stop your dog from making so much noise, answer the phone immediately or let your answering machine get the call after the first ring. This way, you make the source of excitement go away.
