American Staffordshire Terrier Breed Focus
The American Staffordshire Terrier is a direct descendant of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, although it is taller, more muscular and more powerfully-built.
At 17 to 19 inches tall the American Staffordshire is taller than its close relative, the American Pit Bull Terrier. It gives the impression of immense power, with a huge head and incredibly powerful jaws. Cropping the ears make the dog look even more intimidating, although uncropped ears are more common. The coat is short and can be a variety of colors, either sold or cropped.
The Am Staff’s origins are in Staffordshire, England. The progenitor of the breed, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was created here by crossing the Bulldog to various terrier breeds. When these dogs arrived in America, local breeders saw the potential for a fighting dog, but wanted to increase its bulk.
When dog fighting was outlawed in the early 20th century, there was a split in the Am Staff breed. The American Staffordshire Terrier became a popular competitor in the show ring, while the unfortunate dogs still used in illegal dog fights formed the foundation for the American Pit breed.
Despite its fearsome reputation, a well-bred American Staffordshire Terrier is actually an outgoing, happy and stable dog. They bond very strongly of their family, and are also very good with children, although they are too strong and boisterous to play safely with young kids.
They also have strong protective instincts, making them excellent guard dogs. Just the sight of an Am Staff is enough to send most aggressors packing.
An untrained American Staffordshire Terrier is very difficult to control. Although they are not generally aggressive, these are immensely strong dogs and most definitely require obedience training, early socialization and strong, consistent pack leadership.

The American Staffordshire Terrier is generally a sound breed, but like all purebred dogs, suffers from a number of inherited diseases. These include hip dysplasia, congenital heart disease, tumors, cataracts, skin allergies, and thyroid problems. Average lifespan for the breed is 12 to 16 years.
Grooming an Am Staff is a simple matter of a weekly brush down, while you can also bathe the dog once a month or so.
Despite its size and energy, the Am Staff will adapt to an apartment, as long as it gets at least a long daily walk. However, a house with a medium to large garden is a much better living arrangement.
These dogs love being close to those they love, and are therefore better suited to living indoors.
