Why Dogs Bark and How to Stop Excessive Barking
Woof! Woof! Woof!
Those of us who have had a pets know what these sounds are. These are the sounds of a dog’s bark. Through these sounds the dog may be saying “I am hungry! Let me eat!” or “I am bored. Can you play with me?” or even “There is something suspicious with this stranger. Come over here master and check it out!” Whatever the bark means, it is the primary means of communication by a dog.
A dog’s barks may be useful. Have you ever heard of the story where the person was awakened in the middle of the night by a dog’s barking? The person found out later that had the dog not barked, that person would have been engulfed in a raging fire deep in sleep.
Another useful instance of a dog’s bark is in police enforcement. We know that the police use sniffing dogs to detect illegal drugs. A bark from the sniffing dog will signify the presence of a hidden narcotic.
On the other hand, barks from a dog can be a nuisance. Most of us have experienced being awakened in the middle of a nap by a dog’s bark only to find that the dog is just barking without any apparent reason. Have you ever watched on television a video where a neighbor was caught shooting dogs from across the fence with the use of his pellet gun? The narrator later said that the reason he was shooting the dog was because he could not stand the dog’s barking.
We have established that barking can be both beneficial and a nuisance. It becomes a nuisance when the barking becomes excessive. So how do we teach the dog to stop barking excessively? In most cases, excessive barking can be remedied by dog obedience training. Providing toys or food toys to the dog can keep it preoccupied thereby minimizing the possible occurrence of barking. Moving the dog from an area where there is high human traffic to a more peaceful spot is another way of controlling excessive barking.
Aside from dog obedience training, there is a device which can help control a dog’s incessant barking. The device is known as bark collars. These collars produce unpleasant sensations to the dog whenever they bark. The purpose of these collars is for the dog to associate the unpleasant sensations to their barking. Over time, the dog will learn to stop barking excessively because the dog has learned that barking is the cause of that sensation.
A bark collar contains an electronic device in the dog collar which detects barking and afterwards emits either an odor (such as citronella), sound or electric impulse which is unpleasant to the dog. The odor, sound or electric impulse can be adjusted accordingly.
A dog barks for a reason which is to communicate with us and with other dogs. A dog’s bark can be useful and can a nuisance. It is up to the owners to train the dogs to bark at appropriate time. A bark collar helps in training the dogs against excessive barking.
