Dog Bark Collars – Why You Should Get the Size Right
Shopping for dog bark collars? It’s good that you’ve chosen an approach that is both reliable and affordable. But it pays to keep in mind the ways in which dog training can become less of what you expect. Let’s go over some potential problems you might face when you train your dog.
Why it’s important to get the collar size right
Some dog owners use on their dogs are hand-me-downs – bark collars used by other dogs. That’s a problem already. There are various breeds and sizes of dogs – so what fit snugly on one dog may not be so on another. If you’re not knowledgeable about this matter, you can always get a plethora of reading material on the topic by searching online; or by asking your vet.
You don’t want a bark collar that activates intermittently. You will get a dog which gets mixed signals about its barking. The good quality dog collars activate only when the nodes on the device sense vibrations from the dog’s throat, when it barks. When the dog barks, the bark collar’s nodes in contact with the dog’s throat activates, and the dog feels a stimulus – a spray, a sound, a static.
The goal is for every bark to be met with a deterrent. If the collar slides around, the collar will not be able to reliably detect each bark.
You will also expose the bark collar to wear and tear that can be avoidable. The dog might be clawing at the device and banging it around should you not be around. The device might get damaged, or soaked, and not work anymore. Your dog could also get more annoyed when it accidentally increases the settings of the device from his constant clawing around with it.
If you tighten the collar too much, your dog could choke. It could also find the collar uncomfortable. It may not bark all the time, but it may want to keep clawing the collar and potentially injure itself. If you just take the time to find the right size, you could avoid these problems. When you go buy or try out some collars for your dog, be sure to (1) ask or check that your dog’s breed matches the recommended sizes, (2) check if the collar is 2-3 inches over your dog’s neck’s circumference, and (3) be able to slip under the collar (when you try it on your dog) 2-3 fingers.
